SHAH ALAM - Portugal and Penang shared their experiences on green practices and zero waste concept during a visit to Penang recently as part of World Habitat Day (WHD 2022) which falls on Oct 3.

Themed “Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind”, it looks at growing inequality and challenges within cities and human settlements.

Pollar, a participant from Portugal said she liked the way Penang was trying to improve its environment and to esnure sustainability.

“The cooperation between cities is crucial. We can learn from each other to promote sustainability and waste management and development of the city,” she further said.

Meanwhile, a member of the Environment Resource Centre of Taman Bagan Lallang in Penang said recycling programmes have tripled as compared to five or ten years ago.

“Besides that, we are also into planting aquaponic and hydroponic plants,” he said.

Another programme, Retort Programme Project in Penang since 2018 has successfully implemented various zero waste programme.

Additionally, Malaysia has achieved the first and largest Smart Vanilla Farm in Penang where the farm practices zero waste management by creating an aquaponic system with fish and vegetables in the ecosystem. Fish waste is also used to grow vegetables.
