TIME dotCOM Bhd Customer Service head Satesh Vasu said this is because WiFi and many other electronic devices use radio frequency so the production of many signals at one time can cause the device not to receive optimum connection.
"Radio frequency is like an ordinary radio, when we switch on the radio, we receive transmission signal from television or radio station through the antenna. Similarly the technology for walkie talkie, sometimes the signal is not clear so we have to adjust for the correct frequency.
"Most of the devices we use produce radio frequencies. When all devices produce radio frequencies, everything will compete and form interference and when there are too many radio frequencies, all devices cannot connect optimally, and the internet becomes slow," he said.
He was speaking on the programme ‘Internet dan Anda’ produced by Bernama with the topic "Why is your internet speed slow? " on Facebook, last night.
Apart from that, Satesh said the types of devices used to connect to the internet with the suitable router also played an important role for consumers to enjoy the desired speed according to their subscription.
He said WiFi signal usually uses the 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) or 5GHz frequencies while WiFi6e which is newer uses 6GHz frequency.
"Old devices usually use 2.4GHz frequency...but it will be a problem when many devices are in use which creates interference and internet on the devices we use would also become slower.
"If the frequency is 5GHz, it would be faster as not many devices use this frequency. As such we encourage using smartphones or laptops which are connected with 5GHz frequency.
"Regarding WiFi, we have to understand that when the router 'talks' to the device, it will not talk to all the devices at the same time but it will talk to the devices one by one. So if there are 50 devices in the house, we have to talk one by one until we get to the device we want to use," he said.
Therefore, he also advised users to use a quality router and restart their respective WiFi routers to reduce the problem of Internet access interruptions in the future. - BERNAMA
