He said that for all 11 hospitals in the state, the capacity for obstetrics bed usage was 71 per cent, involving 521 obstetrics beds and 82 maternity beds.
"However, the capacity for obstetrics bed usage at six specialist hospitals is between 83 per cent and 127 per cent, based on the official operational beds of these specialist hospitals, which is between 30 and 126 beds,” he said in a statement today.
The six specialist hospitals are Sultanah Aminah Hospital and Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru; Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar; Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat; Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang; and Segamat Hospital.
As such, Ling said various measures have been taken, including placing additional beds in obstetrics wards to accommodate excess patients.
He said other measures taken included placing patients in other wards (like the gynaecology ward) and allowing earlier discharge of patients, with at least six hours of observation after delivery, for certain cases if both mother and child are found to be healthy.
Ling said this when commenting on a statement by Deputy Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff two days ago on the shortage of beds in maternity wards of government hospitals. - BERNAMA
