SHAH ALAM – Former premier and founder of the Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) coalition Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says despite Malaysia being a multiracial country, the reality at the grassroots did not reflect.

He touched on the vernacular education system in Malaysia where Malays went to public schools and spoke Bahasa Melayu while the Chinese went to Chinese public schools and spoke Mandarin.

“This means that the Chinese still want to maintain the identity of another nation.

“The Malays want to maintain the identity of this land so that means Chinese are more racist because they are prioritising the land of their forefathers and not here,” he said at the GTA press conference Hard Talk held at Bangi Convention Centre this evening.

He also said in a Malay-dominant area, it would be hard for a Chinese to contest because Malays would not support the Chinese candidate which was also applicable in a Chinese-dominant setting.

Due to that, the Langkawi MP said both races still deeply care about their own racial background.

When asked why most of his attention was directed to the Malays in his politics, he said the Malay race was special.

Usually, he said that race does not determine religion but things were different for Malaysia where if one was a Malay, it would mean they would be a Muslim as well.

“If we fight for Malays, automatically we are also fighting for Islam.
