Trader Mohd Syauqi Mustapa, 42, said his idea to produce the fusion dish of Japanese and Malaysian food by having sambal, anchovies, ground nuts and boiled eggs as filling for the sushi was sparked by a customer’s request.
"I have been selling sushi and nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaves at the stall for some time. Perhaps because the two food are placed next to each other, many people ask us to sell sushi according to Malaysia's taste,” he said when met at the Murai.my Nasi Lemak Carnival held at the Mydin supermarket here today.
Mohd Syauqi, who started selling the fusion dish in March this year said he prepared five different types of sambal for the sushi including prawn and anchovy sambal as well as rendang with prices ranging from RM1.20 to RM2.50 per piece.
He said the food was well received by customers and he was able to sell about 1,500 pieces a day at the three Zara Sushi and Nasi Lemak stalls and a restaurant in the capital, including at Dataran Pandan Prima and Setapak Jaya.
Meanwhile, event organizer Shahful Shaffiq Mohd Salleh said the one-day programme, from 9 am to 5 pm brought together eight nasi lemak vendors.
He said it was held to promote nasi lemak as the Malaysian food.
"Nasi lemak is synonymous with Malaysians. Malaysians, regardless of race love nasi lemak.
"So we bring together well-known nasi lemak traders around Klang Valley to promote their speciality,” he said, adding that the event was also enlivened with a cooking demonstration by Chef Dr Ezani Farhana Md Monoto and a performance singer Aisha Retno. - Bernama
