Eminent Indian Islamic Scholar Jalaluddin Umri dies at 88

He was a former head of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, a socio-religious organisation, and vice president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), an assembly of intellectuals and organisations.
A noted orator and author of two dozen books, Jalaluddin's writings are considered authoritative on various subjects.
The AIMPLB praised him as "an excellent thinker and a visionary Islamic scholar".
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani remembered him as someone who served as the voice of Indian Muslims while scholar Zafarul Islam Khan called him a "pillar of the community".
Jalaluddin was born in 1935 in a village called Puttagram in the North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu state.
