Syed Saddiq urges immediate implementation of amended Employment Act 1955

SHAH ALAM – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman urges the Employment Act 1955 (Amendment) 2022 which was postponed to January 1 next year to be implemented immediately.

He described the postponement as showing the government did not seem to care about the welfare of workers.

"The Employment Act (amendment) passed last March, but the minister announced to postpone it yesterday (Friday).

"An amendment that should have been enforced immediately has been delayed for four months. Why does the welfare of the working class seem to be neglected?

"I'm sure many people are looking forward to the enforcement of the Employment (Amendment) Act, which should start on September 1, just over a week away but minister postponed it to next year," he said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

The enforcement of the Employment Act 1955 (Amendment) 2022 which was scheduled to begin on September 1 was postponed to January 1 next year.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan on Friday said the postponement had been decided at a Cabinet meeting after the industry and employers unanimously applied for a deferment based on a number of factors.

In the meantime, Syed Saddiq also questioned the reason for the delay, where the industry needed more time to implement the act.

"My question is why? This is because the act was passed in March.

"Surely today passes, tomorrow is enforced! Don't look for excuses, but do it right away!" he said.
