SHAH ALAM - Xavier Andre Justo, the 1MDB scandal whistleblower today said he is "delighted" to see a strong and independent justice in Malaysia after former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was sentenced to prison yesterday.

"After all these years, justice has been served.

"I strongly doubt that the money lost will recover but it's a strong signal," he told Sinar Daily.

He said it's a leading example for a new generation of Malaysians to trust the country's justice.

"Having played a role in this adventure I feel proud of the outcome.

"My thoughts are also with Clare Rewcastle Brown and The Edge, without them nothing will have been achieved," he said, referring to the major role played by both parties in exposing the scandal.

However, he said he has "no pleasure seeing a man sent to prison, even a guilty one.

"I hope he (Najib) will use his time in jail to work on his redemption and ask for forgiveness," Justo said.

He also wished Malaysia "a better future."

In March 2020, Swiss national Justo left Malaysia to Switzerland in the interest of the safety of his family following the sudden collapse of Pakatan Harapan government.

Justo was jailed in Thailand in 2015 for allegedly blackmailing his former employer Petrosaudi to release the incriminating data.

He later leaked it to Sarawak Report and The Edge, prompting investigations by several countries into the multi-million ringgit 1MDB sovereign wealth fund.

Justo was released from Thai prison in 2016 after he was granted a royal pardon.
