SHAH ALAM - Judicial independence is based on the interests of the people, says Rasuah Busters chief executive officer Nurhayati Nordin.

Such confidence, she said should be maintained by highlighting justice based on the facts and laws enshrined without any undue control or influence from any party.

She said integrity of the judicial body which was independent, will not put anyone above the law.

"According to Socrates: "Four things that belong to a judge: To hear courteously, to answer wisely, to consider soberly and to decide impartially," she said.

The anti-graft movement chief said any unfounded and unprofessional remarks made against the judiciary would not bring any benefit and would only disparage the democracy in the country.

“The judges are the shields that preserve the Constitution and the responsibility to protect the values supported by the legislature should remain and be free from any interference from any party.

"Therefore, obstruction to the democracy and threats on judicial independence by any group, must be stopped and dealt with vigilantly,” said Nurhayati.

She added that judicial independence meant being fair even though the decision was unpopular and the court needed to defend the truth even if it has to ignore the view of majority of the people.
