PUTRAJAYA - The 2022 Environmental Debate Competition among higher education institutions (IPTs) will start on Aug 20, with students from 28 public and private institutions in the country have confirmed their participation.

Environment director-general Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the competition was an approach by the Department of Environment (DoE) to create awareness among the younger generation on the importance of environmental preservation and conservation.

"It also provides a platform for them to share and voice their thoughts on critical environmental issues towards achieving goals in human capital development," he said in a statement today.

The preliminary stages of the competition will be held online while the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals on Aug 27, 2022, will be held physically at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) as the host of this year's competition.

Themed "Earth crisis: climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution and waste", the debate competition is being organised by the DOE in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), the Malaysian Universities Debate Council (MADUM) and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), supported by Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd (SESB) and the Sabah Foundation as strategic partners. - BERNAMA
