MELAKA - The Melaka state government will monitor and provide all necessary assistance to ensure the welfare of the 46 Al-Ehya Karim Religious High School students affected by yesterday's storm, said state Education and Technology Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin.

He said together with the representatives from the state Education Department, he had visited the school’s hostel damaged by the storm.

"It is quite badly damaged and uninhabitable. So, for the time being, all 46 female students were moved to the dining hall," he told reporters at the closing ceremony of the Melaka School Sports Council (MSSSNM) Football Tournament at the MUSA Complex, Krubong here today.

He said repair work is expected to take about a month to complete, adding that the welfare of the affected students will be taken care of throughout the period.

"The State Education Department and the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM) have sent initial aid such as mattresses, blankets and pillows for their use. We have also asked MAIM to speed up the repair process so that their studies are not interrupted," he said.

In the 9.40 am incident, 56 families from 48 houses including the homestay units in four villages namely Kampung Pasir Gembor, Kampung Air Hitam Darat, Kampung Air Hitam Pantai and Kampung Balik Batu as well as a mosque were affected but there were no casualties among the residents.

In other developments, Rais said the state government will allocate an incentive of RM5,000 for the development of the MSSSNM football teams at the grass root level.

The four-day MSSSNM football tournament which began on Aug 8 involved 113 primary schools and 57 secondary schools from Merlimau, Jasin, Bukit Cina, Air Keroh, Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah and Tanjung. - BERNAMA
