Most rape victims know their suspects through social media, police investigations revealed

SHAH ALAM – Police revealed many rape victims especially children get acquainted with the suspect through social media such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp text messaging system.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk S Sasikala Devi said the modus operandi of the suspect is to get acquainted and establish a love relationship.

However, parents may be unaware of this and may think their child is with her or his friends.

Under Section 375 (G) of the Penal Code, it is an offence to have sex with youths below 16.

Despite this, the first half of the year saw 161 cases reported, 65 people (40.37 per cent) of the suspects were friends of the victims, 55 (34.16 per cent) of the suspects contacted the victims, 30 (18.63 per cent) of the suspects were the victims' families and the remaining 11 people (6.83 per cent) had other ways of contacting the victim.
