Motac looks to curb Haj pilgrims scam by travel agents

KUALA LUMPUR - Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) ministry is looking at cases of stranded haj pilgrims at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in July believed to have been scammed by travel agencies.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Santhara Kumar said they are assessing and reviewing the issue before taking the next step.

He was replying to Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (PH-Hang Tuah) who asked to state proactive actions by the ministry over Haj scams that sparked outrage among the public.

Sinar Harian on Sunday reported that 111 stranded individuals in KLIA on July 7 filed a lawsuit against a travel agency.

Lawyer Muhammad Nazrin Mohd Seth said the claim will be made in High Court after completing the documentation process.

On July 8, media reports said around 380 would be hajj pilgrims were reported stranded in KLIA believed to be victims of a private travel agency scam.

They were gathered in Level 5, KLIA Departure Station using furada visa to perform hajj and not through Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).
