LABUAN - One thousand pupils from various primary schools in this duty-free island received school bags and cash amounting to RM40,000 under the Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan’s (YWP) back-to-school programme.

The annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme held at the Bukit Kuda Open Hall on Sunday was part of the foundation to help ease the financial burden of the B40 group in light of the increased cost of living.

Labuan Corporation chairman Senator Datuk Bashir Alias said the programme initially slated early this year had to be postponed due to the pandemic of COVID-19.

"We should be grateful having been able to organise this event this year, and it benefited 1,000 pupils from the B40 group, with each pupil receiving RM40 cash and a school bag.

"At least it could help ease the burden of parents to acquire schooling materials,” he told Bernama.

Single mother Normala Abu Bakar thanked the YWP for the initiative and said it would help ease her burden in buying schooling materials for her daughter.

"My eight-year-old daughter will enrol in Year Three next year. After my husband died of COVID-19 last year, we have been facing financial difficulties to buy school uniforms and other school necessities for her...with this contribution, it will certainly help,” said the 49-year-old mother of three.

Fisherman Abdul Karim Husin, 45, was also glad that his fourth son was chosen to receive school aid from the YWP.

"This schooling material and the cash will at least reduce my financial constraints a little,” he said.
