Woman in remand over baby's death

LUMUT - An eight-month-old boy died after he was believed to have been abused in an incident at Sungai Siput yesterday.

Police received the report of the incident at about 7.10am which informed them that a had died while he was transported to on his way to the Sungai Siput Hospital.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the baby was brought to the hospital by his mother after being in an unconscious state.

Initial investigations, he said, showed several injuries on the body of the baby.

"Police then ordered an autopsy to be done at the Ipoh Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.

"The findings from the autopsy showed the injuries on the baby was caused by a blunt object," he said when met during the Working Visit of the Perak Police Chief to Pangkor Island here today.

Following the incident, police had arrested the mother to aid in the investigations.

The 30-year-old mother worked as a nurse and was divorced with her husband since six months ago.

"The woman did not have any other children and lived with her baby after being divorced.

"Police now is investigating the case for the possibility of another individual being involved in the case," he said.

Mior Faridalathrash said the woman was remanded for seven days until Aug 1.

"The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," he said.
