Umno to conduct party election this year if RoS rejects constitutional amendments
PONTIAN - Umno will most likely conduct party elections this year if the Registrar of Societies (RoS) rejects the party's constitutional amendment application.
Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the party also have another plan if the election was not held before Dec 29.
However, the Pontian MP refused to reveal the details of Plan B as planned by the party.
"Umno has a Plan B, but if we don’t want (to use) the Plan B, then we will hold the party elections before December 29.
“However, we will implement Plan B if RoS does not allow the constitutional amendment compared to conducting an election.
"Umno is actually not up for Plan B. We hope ROS approves the application because there is no reason for it not to be approved because it is the same as what MCA did before," he said.
Ahmad said he was confident that the application to RoS would be approved because Umno was implementing the constitutional amendment in accordance with the prescribed procedures and processes.
Apart from that, his party was not expecting any issue in getting the society’s approval as the agency had approved the same application by MCA.
Umno had previously postponed party elections at all levels of branches, divisions and the Supreme Council for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30 last year.
If counted, the 18-month period will end at the end of this year and Umno elections must be held before December 30, 2022.
Based on the amendment document tabled, it provided two proposed new clauses, which were Clause 10.16.1 which stated that the Umno Supreme Council had the right to postpone elections at the leadership, division and branch levels.
