“I am not sure whether Malaysians feel like is a top priority as it is not something they relate to because for most of them, in their mind, they tend to think that their representatives, MPs and the prime minister are omnipotent,” he said at a conference jointly organised by Bersih and the Bar Council
Commenting further, he said it's different for the people in Bangsar. “In my constituency, Bangsar, people will ask me about it,” he said.
However, Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi said the biggest challenge does not solely revolve around public perception but the willingness of the lower house to push through reforms and rebuild government institutions.
“We need to build a structure that is healthy enough for democracy in Malaysia.
“What we are doing before the election is very important, we are setting the base because after the elections we do not know what will happen especially after the first political transition,” she said at the conference. She was referring to Sheraton Move in 2020 where an elected government collapsed after MPs jump ship.
“The question is, whether the 220 parliamentarians sitting in the Dewan Rakyat are willing to push through the reforms,” she said.
