Prof Sharifudin appointed as USIM vice-chancellor

SEREMBAN - Professor Sharifudin Md Shaarani has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) effective yesterday, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad.

Noraini said Sharifudin was highly respected by his academic colleagues and the ministry was confident that he would be able to lead USIM as the university of choice as well as boost the country's academic excellence as a whole.

Sharifudin, 51, holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours (Food Science with Business Management) and Master's Degree in Food Technology from the University of Reading, United Kingdom.

"He also holds a doctor of philosophy (PhD) from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, in the field of Medicinal Chemistry, apart from serving as the dean of Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for nine years," she said in a statement.

"He had served as USIM Research and Innovation Management Centre director before being appointed as the USIM deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation) on Feb 16," she added.

Sharifudin was also entrusted to carry out his function as USIM vice-chancellor effective May 10 and the ministry also expressed its appreciation to the outgoing USIM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin for his services at USIM. - Bernama
