Terengganu Umno backs Zahid as party president
AMY EZREENKUALA TERENGGANU – Terengganu Umno has asked the party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to continue leading the party despite mounting pressure to step down.
Terengganu Umno Information Chief Datuk Nik Dir Nik Wan Ku said the action taken by the party president to drop Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman from Umno Supreme Council is appropriate.
"Zahid's action is seen as appropriate because he has the power to appoint supreme council members in accordance with the party's law," he said in a statement.
He said Umno general-secretary Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has defended Zahid's achievements in winning seven by-elections, Melaka and Johor state elections and taking over Perak from the opposition.
"The biggest success is to support Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the prime minister.
"Therefore, he (Zahid) does not have to accept the pressure to step down. Continue to lead the party and bring greater success in the 15th General Election later," he said.
Last Monday, Tajuddin claimed that Zahid was not qualified to lead the party and should resign from the top party post.
