SHAH ALAM - Umno's secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has defended his party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi preformances since the 14th general elections.

He said the party's success speaks for itself.

Umno, he said has won seven by-elections since 2018 general elections and reclaimed Perak and Melaka from the opposition.

"Umno's closes friend in Sarawak won by 93 percent or 76 out of 82 seats," he said, referring to Gabungan Parti Sarawak's (GPS) victory in Dec 2021 state elections.

The party also won 71 percent or 40 out of 56 seats in Johor state elections.

"Results are crucial after a struggle," said the Pontian MP told Sinar Daily.

He was asked on former Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman claims in a tell-all press conference on June 27 over an alleged movement led by Umno's number 2 Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to pressure Zahid to resign as party president.

Ahmad said after the fall of former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, 15 Umno MPs had urged Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to be the prime minister.

"Ismail Sabri has also be confirmed as the poster for the prime minister's post for GE15," he said.

Tajuddin alleged that the plot was to obtain signatures from division chiefs in a memorandum calling for Zahid's resignation with a survey showing that that this move was supported by 131 out of 191 Umno division chiefs.

However, the call to ask Zahid fizzled out after Mohamad or commonly known as Tok Mat and Najib backed out. Both are yet to respond on the matter.

On June 21, Tajuddin was removed as Umno supreme council member. Zahid had said the sudden termination of Tajuddin as a supreme council member wasn't surprising as the Pasir Salak MP himself should know the reasons for his removal.

Former Selangor Barisan information chief Isham Jalil was appointed on June 24 to replace Tajuddin.
