KOTA KINABALU - Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Pro Chancellor Tan Sri Azman Hashim believes that corrupt practises is like 'bad eggs' that can damage an organisation.

Azman, who is also the Ambank Group’s Honorary Advisor said no tolerance should be given to corruption as it would only bring losses for the country.

"Bribery is said to be an endemic within the culture and lives in Malaysia.

“The issues such as oil smuggling, human trafficking and even the purchase of identification cards and illegal passports are tied to certain parties.

"Too many 'bad eggs' in an organisation and multiple cases awaiting trial in court," he said in a speech at the 23rd Convocation Ceremony of UMS, here on Sunday.

He said graduates needed to learn from Singapore's former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who had successfully made Singapore a country with the lowest number of corrupt cases.

"There are many negative impacts of bribes when it is left to spread.

“Among them are that it can cause the bankruptcy of a country and absurd debts such as what happened in Venezuela.

"Furthermore, I want to remind graduates to not tolerate any form of misuse of power and the practice of bribes no matter what fields are pursued in the future," he said.

Before that, Azman had presented scrolls for graduates in the second and fourth sessions that was held at the UMS Chancellor Hall.
