MELAKA - Four policemen were remanded in magistrate's court here today to aid investigations into a case of asking and receiving a total of RM12,000 in bribes from inmates.

The four suspects ranked corporals and lance corporals aged between 35 and 40 years old were remanded for seven days.

The remand was allowed by Magistrate Mazana Sinin after they were arrested in the Melaka Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office when they gave their statements on Tuesday.

The suspects, clad in orange inmate clothing, arrived at the court around 9.30am escorted by MACC personnel.

They were accused of receiving bribes to smuggle prohibited items such as cigarettes, drugs, tobacco and food to the inmates of the lockup they were stationed at.

The payment that the suspects allegedly received was through the inmates and over 20 transactions were made in cash or online transfers in a police station in Alor Gajah District between 2019 to 2020.

The suspects were believed to have received RM600 to RM9,000 throughout the acts.

Melaka MACC Chief Mohd Shahril Che Saad confirmed the case was being investigated following Section 16 (a)(B) of the SPRM Act 2009.
