UiTM pioneer Arshad Ayub dies
KUALA LUMPUR - Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) pioneer Tun Arshad Ayub died this morning at 2.06am, his family has confirmed.
He was 93.
A statement released by the family was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) since Tuesday due to health issues.
Dubbed as one of the well known educational innovator and administrator, Arshad was the chairman of the board of directors in Universiti Malaya and pro-chancellor of UiTM.
Arshad, born in Muar, Johor in 1928 was a rubber tapper's son successfully completed his studies in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), University College of Wales, Aberyswyth (UK) and Lausanne (Switzerland).
His success story has impressed as he went on to hold various prominent positions in the government, including deputy governor of Bank Negara Malaysia from 1975 to 1977.
He was later appointed as secretary-general of the agriculture ministry.
Arshad had also devised specially tailored pre-university programmes to ensure students could qualify for professional courses along with programmes from certificate level to advanced diplomas.
He had also set up campuses in remote parts of Perlis, Sabah and Sarawak ensuring rural kids were not left behind in education.
