543 settlers of Felda Neram 2 receive land grants
CHUKAI - The long wait of nearly 40 years for 543 Felda Neram 2 settlers here to own land grants for houses and oil palm plantations of more than four hectares was finally over today.
More meaningfully, the presentation of the grants was officiated by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, and several settlers met by reporters expressed their gratitude to the government because their lives have improved since joining the Felda land scheme in 1983.
Md Nor Salleh, 67, said it was difficult to describe the hardships and trials he went through with his wife Siti Fatimah Che Daud, 64, when he became a settler because he had to clear the jungle and live in poverty.
"However, the government through Felda has helped a lot by providing loan schemes, education facilities for children and even establishing grocery stores with the 'take first, pay later' method.
"All the facilities provided by Felda are very helpful in easing the financial burden of the settlers and as a result, we are able to live comfortably here," he said after the grant handover ceremony here today.
Another settler, Abdul Razak Ghani, 68, said he felt lucky to be selected to join Felda Neram 2 in 1983 because he was determined to build a better life for his family.
"Before joining Felda, I worked in a private oil palm plantation in Sungai Tong, Setiu. As soon as I knew the government was opening another Felda settlement in Kemaman, I applied at once as I had seen Felda's success in several other locations before," he said.
Abdul Razak said Felda offered them complete facilities including schools, mosques and public halls and a harmonious social life with their neighbours.
"Thank you very much to the government, especially Felda, for providing a comfortable life for us," he said, shedding tears upon receiving his grant. - BERNAMA
