Don't be so sure of GE15, MoU 2.0 may be extended, says DAP MP
SHAH ALAM - Klang MP Charles Santiago has told Umno and BN leaders not to be too confident that the 15th General Election (GE15) will be held soon.
The DAP leader said instead of GE15, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and Pakatan Harapan may be extended after the July 31 expiry date.
He said it was clear that there was handful of Umno leaders, especially those facing court cases 'lobbying' for GE15 to be held earlier to contest the election.
"There is a possibility that MoU 2.0 can be extended to give space to the government to resolve issues surrounding prices of goods, cost of living and food crisis that are plaguing the country at the moment.
"So far, there has been no formal discussion in that direction, but I am confident that the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is also aware that there may not be a need to hold elections at a time when the country is facing a bigger crisis than the Covid-19 pandemic," he told Sinar Premium.
Santiago said this to speculations that GE15 is likely to be held soon as several government agencies have been mobilised.
Meanwhile, Kuala Nerus MP Datuk Dr Khairuddin Aman Razali said GE15 should be held as soon as possible to create a stronger government and to attract foreign investors.
He said as Umno and BN gain the rakyat's support, PH and Perikatan Nasional (PN) will find ways to extend the government's administration while they strategise themselves after losing in three state elections.
"The Prime Minister as one of the Umno MPs should follow the party's wishes, but everything is up to him," he said.
