Drunk driver kills couple in a crash

JASIN - A couple was killed in a collision after an intoxicated driver crashed into their motorcycle at Jalan Serkam Pantai, Merlimau, today.

The victims, Ezuddin Mohammad, 50, and his wife, Surayah Muhamat, 48, who worked as a factory operator, were on their way from Melaka to Merlimau in the 7.45am incident.

State Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department chief Superintendent Amran@Mohamad Zaki Omar said the 24-year-old man who was believed to be intoxicated had allegedly lost control of his Perodua Myvi and swerved into the opposite lane.

He said the driver, who also worked as a factory operator, failed to dodge the victims’ Yamaha Ego Solaris motorcycle and crashed into them as well as two other motorcycles before crashing into a house.

“The couple sustained severe injuries to head and body and they were pronounced dead at the scene,” he said when contacted here on Monday.

He added the two other motorcycles, a Yamaha Lagenda motorcycle rode by a senior citizen Ya’akob Mohamad, 57, caught fire while another bike owned by a 55-year-old woman parked on the roadside was also damaged.

“The driver of the car and Ya’akob suffered minor injuries and were sent to Hospital Melaka for further treatment.

“Meanwhile, the female motorcyclists and homeowners did not suffer any injuries.
