MXKids platform to discover young motocross riders
KUALA LUMPUR - The MXKids Funrace (MXKids) Series 2022 Championships, which began in February, aim to be a platform to unearth young motocross riders.
MXKids Malaysia programme director Fazril Ahmad Zabidi said they decided to hold the meet following a dearth of motorsports events for children in the country.
"As we know, motocross development in the country is about 10 to 12 years behind other nations, like Thailand and Indonesia. Most of the programmes we had previously were more inclined towards hobbies and not championships.
"So, we felt that it would be a waste if the country does not have any development in this sport. This meet is a special motocross development for children,” he told Bernama today.
Fazril said that motocross events for children were previously just side-shows at championships but the MXKids involved various special categories for young riders aged between six and 16.
He explained that the meet is divided into two categories, namely rookie and advance.
"This is a developmental race as all riders will be given a medal each to ensure they enjoy themselves and the top five riders will compete in the Masters Series. Perhaps, they can be groomed to compete at the international level.
"We have a five-year target where Malaysian youngsters will be able to compete in international races against riders from Indonesia and Thailand,” he said.
Meanwhile, the second round of the MXKids will rev off at the Bandar Tun Razak Motocross Track in Pahang this weekend (May 4-5) in collaboration with Fattah Motorsports, KTM Malaysia and AMSOIL, who will be holding a Cadet Motocross Riding Clinic where young riders will be exposed to proper riding techniques.
The first round of the MXKids was held at the Ulu Yam Motocross Track in Selangor on Feb 26-27.
Fazril said they also planned to form a motocross association specifically for children that is registered under the Youth and Sports Ministry. - BERNAMA
