KUALA LUMPUR - The proposal on Umno’s constitution amendment to allow the election process to be held after the general election (GE) should not be done merely for the purpose of maintaining the position of one or two certain leaders.

Gua Musang MP Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said he has no problem in supporting the planned constitutional amendment agenda which would be proposed through the Umno Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), tomorrow (Sunday), as it was the party’s rights.

However, he insisted that any major decision made by the party should benefit the society especially the Malays in the country.

“If it is done merely for their own interests, it would have no benefits to the Malays.

“Because in the end, the Malays are the ones who decide whether the action is right or not. It must be based on the needs of the members and not just to fulfil the needs of one or two leaders. I don't think that's right, "he said in an exclusive interview with Sinar Harian on Tuesday.

He said this when commenting on Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan’s statement emphasising that the amendment proposal on Umno’s constitution for the party polls to be held after the 15th general-election (GE15) was expected to be easily approved at the EGM, this Sunday.

Ahmad Maslan said this follows the motion which was proposed by the Umno Supreme Working Council (MKT) during the Umno general assembly, last month, which was unanimously supported by the representatives who were present.

The Pontian MP added that even if the motion has been approved during the general assembly, it needed to be done in accordance with the procedures of the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
