'We have a secret recipe to woo youths to PKR' says Fahmi, Wei Kiat
ATHIRA AMINUDDIN
SHAH ALAM - As PKR polls draw nearer, Fahmi Zainol and his running mate Chua Wei Kiat who are gunning for the party's youth and deputy youth posts are all out to woo youths with their "secret recipe" which includes job opportunities and higher salary.
Fahmi said the new minimum wage of RM1,500 was still insufficient due to hike in cost of living and prices of homes remain beyond the reach of youths.
“The minimum wage should at least be RM2,500 monthly. Yes, we want the minimum wage to increase but realistically, I think it should be RM2,500.
“When I worked in a factory about 10 years ago, the salary is still the same as it is now. Disappointing.
“I understand an increase will affect small businesses, especially start-up businesses but they should take the risk because it’s not fair to ask youth to leave within the minimum wage,” said Fahmi told Sinar Daily. Since May 1,
The former student activists further suggested job better opportunities.
"In Penang, the state government produces schemes to help youths to secure funding to start small businesses, especially after the pandemic," he said, adding that he has been a part in helping out with the programme.
Youths, he said were hired with good pay.
He and his running mate Chua would present solutions for future generations to ensure youths are able to secure good jobs with benefits, which are critical in the aftermath of the epidemic.
We have more experience than Muda
Chua Wei Kiat said he has been with the party for 15 years and "probably has the most experience in the youth wing. He plans to use his experience to woo Undi18 voters.
While admitting that Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman-led Muda seems more attractive after PKR lost badly in Melaka and Johor polls, Chua said PKR has more experience.
“We have enough force to help us at each parliamentary and state seat. We have a strong base. That makes us different from Muda.”
He said he and Fahmi would be able to tackle youth issues.
“As we move into the endermic phase, we are going to move even more aggressively because we have issues such as jobless youths, and housing.
“The youths are more concerned over what will happen next to them. Younger PKR leaders such as Rafizi Ramli, Nurul Izzah Anwar and I look for solutions,” said Chua to Sinar Daily.
The Rawang assemblyman said voters still want a Malaysia that will fight against political and social ills and "we are here to fight for them and to serve the nation.
PKR party elections will be held from May 13 to 18.
