SHAH ALAM - Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the new minimum wage is pointless if the cost of living keeps rising.

This comes as Putrajaya imposes new minimum wages from RM1,200 to RM1,500 a month from today.

In a statement, he said as long as the existing system enriches the elite rather than looking into the fate and rights of the workers, justice will not be upheld.

"The working class must continue to push for tangible change and unions must continue to be strengthened to ensure the rights and roles of the working class," he said in a statement.

Malaysia's inflation, as measured by consumer price index (CPI), increased 2.2% in March 2022 from a year earlier, mainly driven by the 4% increase in CPI's food and non-alcoholic beverages segment as prices of food items including chicken and vegetables spiked more than 10%, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) had said on April 22.
