What is a medical grade facial?
My beauty routine generally consists of the basic three-step routine (cleansing, toning, moisturising).
Anything beyond that, like facial treatments is always impossible because I don’t have the luxury of time to pamper myself, and frankly, they can be quite expensive.
For that, I have never paid attention to the different types of facial treatments available in the market.
But I have been given the opportunity to try out a medical grade facial treatment called Fire and Ice, also known as the “red carpet” treatment over at the An-Nur Specialist Hospital situated in Bangi, where the treatment would be performed by a consultant plastic surgeon, Dr Najihah Sharida Zakaria.
I didn’t know what to expect but after being given a brief on how the treatment would be done and how it will positively impact my complexion by the end of the treatment, I was happy to dive right into it.
Dr Najihah explained that medical grade facial treatment is different from the usual facial treatment at beauty salons and medical spas as it can only be performed by certified medical practitioner.
“Medical grade means it is done by doctors and it cannot be performed by beauticians in beauty salons,” she told Sinar Daily.
This, she said, is due to products used in the hospital being different to the ones in beauty salons and spas as the acids and the ingredients that they used in the products are at higher concentration which is only suitable to be used for medical purposes.
The “fire” part of the facial involves putting on a layer of mask which contains high concentration acid works to remove the outermost layer of the skin. This lasted for about five minutes.
“If we don't remove it then this is where the uneven appearance, pigmentations and sebum are building up on the skin. So, the mask will remove the layer to provide glow and your skin will heal by itself to produce better skin,” Dr Najihah said.
I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous as the mask left a tingling, and slightly burning sensation on my skin.
However, it cooled off during the “ice” treatment when Dr Najihah layered on a cold gel consistency on my skin for about 15 minutes.
Dr Najihah said the treatment is suitable for any skin condition including for those who have acne-prone skin like me or for those who experience pigmentation problems.
She said the cooling gel contains hyaluronic acid and the ingredients that can help to soothe the irritated skin after the ‘fire’ treatment.
I immediately noticed how soft and supple my skin felt after she applied the cooling gel.
Is the facial treatment shariah compliant?
“Shariah compliance goes beyond halal, it is a lifestyle. The treatment also does not contain any products that are against halal,” said Dr Najihah.
She added that’s it’s not a surgery as it does not change the facial structure of the individual but it is a treatment to brighten up the skin and make the skin appear healthier.
She added that in An-nur Specialist Hospital, the treatment would typically cost over RM499 but until April 30, there is a Glow Raya Promotion where the medical grade facial is only priced at RM269.
Before I went for the treatment, my complexion was rather dull due to the excessive sebum on my skin but afterwards, I noticed that my complexion is visibly brighter and the active acne on my skin have shrunk.
