Tahfiz dormitory gutted by blaze, 74 students safe
ASYIKIN ASMINTAWAU - Students from the Maahad Tahfiz Sulaimaniyyah Rayyaj Bombalai here were left helpless after their dormitory were destroyed by a fire this evening.
Fortunately, all 74 students were safe as they had been performing their taraweeh prayers when it happened.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Julius John Stephen said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 7.44pm.
He said a total of 16 personnel were chased to the scene, located 18km from Tawau station.
"According to reports, a non-permanent madrasah dormitory for over 74 tahfiz students was 70 per cent burnt down.
"No victims were reported as it was understood that all the students were at the mosque across the road performing taraweeh prayers," he said when contacted by Sinar.
He added that the fire was brought under control at 8.17pm.
