Depot Breakout: 80 Rohingya detainees still at large

ALOR SETAR - A total of 80 Rohingya detainees who escaped from the Relau Immigration Temporary Depot in Bandar Baharu are still at large as of last night.

Kedah police chief Commissioner Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad said the 65 men, eight women and seven girls were not found.

However, he said so far police have recaptured 448 out of 528 of them who escaped from the detention depot on Wednesday.

"They comprised 229 men, 89 women, 69 boys and 61 girls.

"There are currently 15 detainees at the depot, 13 of which were men, a woman and a boy," he said in a statement on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Sinar Harian reported that about 700 detainees from the temporary depot have fled in the incident at about 4am.

Unfortunately, six of them who tried to cross at the highway at KM165 of the North-South Expressway were killed when they were hit by a vehicle in an incident at about 6.50am.

The six dead were two adult men and women as well as a girl and a boy.
