528 Rohingya detainees escape immigration depot

SHAH ALAM - A total of 528 Rohingya detainees have escaped from the the Sg Bakap, Penang temporary Immigration Detention Depot, earlier today.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the incident happened at about 4.30am.

He said those who had fled had broken the door of the block and knocked down the barrier grill.

The officers on duty, he said had contacted the police and relevant agencies to get further assistance.

"Operations to recapture the detainees has been carried out with the help from the police, People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) and members of the public.

"As of 10am, a total of 362 detainees have been recaptured and the operation to track down the remaining detainees is continued," he said in a statement, today.

He urged those who have information on the whereabouts of the detainees to inform the Immigration Department of the police immediately.
