Don't make pronouncement of divorce through social media - Kedah Mufti
ALOR SETAR - Muslims are advised against making pronouncement of divorce on their spouses through social media to avoid doubts in terms of syariah law.
Kedah Mufti Datuk Fadzil Awang said a couple seeking for a divorce should do it before the Syariah Court.
“They need to be present together before the court so that what the husband did in their marriage and the pronouncement of divorce would be recorded.
"When both of them appear before the court, there would be no doubts in term of syariah law," he told reporters when met at the Zahir mosque here on Friday.
Commenting further, he said to determine whether the pronouncement of divorce made through social media was valid or not, several aspects needed to be considered first.
He said the wife has to be sure that the person who pronounced the divorce through the platform is truly her husband and not someone else.
“If it (divorce) was uttered by her husband based on the looks, voice and other evidences and there is absolutely no doubt, then the pronouncement of talaq is valid, according to what was said by the husband.
"If there are any elements of doubt for example in the husband's voice although the appearance seemed to be that of her husband, then the divorce is not valid as it could have been edited," he said.
This, he said is emphasised in Islam, in which it is not easy to determine whether the pronouncement would lead to a divorce without looking at all aspects.
