Autism Friendly Towns to be implemented nationwide, soon

SHAH ALAM - Town and Country Planning Department (PlanMalaysia) is in the midst of preparing guidelines for the implementation of “Autism Friendly Towns” nationwide.

It had in a Facebook post said generally, the guideline will take into account not only the needs of the autism community, but also their parents, guardians, family members, teachers and therapists, among others.

It will also include social spaces with an inclusive design.

“Referring to (the slogans) Autism Together and Autism Adventures, the Autism Friendly Town to be implemented in local authority areas (PBT) will be a place where people with autism could travel on public transports, go shopping, participate in sports and recreational activities, dine in restaurants and get health and emergency care services like everyone else,” it said on Saturday.

PlanMalaysia said it was responsible to ensure that Malaysians at all levels of society in the country have equal access to a high and barrier-free quality of life.

“Let us all wait for the Autism Friendly Town implementation guidelines which will be issued soon,” it said in conjunction with World Autism Awareness Day which is celebrated on April 2, every year.
