SHAH ALAM - Malaysia lacks high-level technical software to combat cyber security issues, warns an expert from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), adding that this could lead to hacking and ransomware.

Senior Lecturer Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said Putrajaya needs to look at ways to protect the country against hackers.

"This is to ensure public data is not used by unauthorised parties," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Monday.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was previously reported saying the number of cases linked to cyberbullying, forgery, intrusion, data phishing and email fraud has almost doubled.

Among other reasons for the increase was the lack of public awareness on fraud using emotional psychology.

"(This scam) has elements of romance, fear and greed which are among the most common (cyber security cases)," he said.

Due to that, Noor Nirwandy said Putrajaya should improve cyber defense and create public awareness on various fraud cases including emotional psychology, a common modus operandi in the cyber world.
