Malaysian Alvin Wee bags Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing Award for Encanto work
SHAH ALAM - Producer Alvin Wee from Sarawak has won the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing Award at the Cinema Audio Society Awards in Hollywood for his work on the Disney animated film Encanto.
The 34-year old is the first Malaysian to receive the prestigious award.
In an Instagram post on March 22, Wee posted a picture of him smiling with the trophy with the caption “BRB. Still in shock”. BRB is an acronym for be right back.
The Cinema Audio Society Awards recognises outstanding sound mixing in film and television.
Wee, who was born in Kuching, is credited as the Scoring Mixer of the Sound Mixing Team for Encanto’s soundtrack.
He was also involved in many other films including Netflix’s After We Fell, the live-action Mulan, Kingsman: The Secret Service and No Time To Die.
He just recently finished up on the music mix team for the upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick, which will premiere in the United States in May.
Wee has also worked on video games such as Final Fantasy XIII and Uncharted 4: The Thief’s End.
A few days prior, also in an Instagram post, he shared a picture of an article on how he, Encanto’s score mixer, blended traditional Columbian Instrumentation with a Broadway sound.
“Really happy for team @encatomovie this past week for all the recognition they’re getting in all these events.
“What a joy it is to celebrate your hard work,” he said on March 16.
Encanto has been nominated for three Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards; Best Animated Feature Film, Best Original Score and Best Original Song for ‘Dos Oruguitas’.
The movie focuses on the Madrigal family and their compelling but complicated relationships within families especially those with multiple generations living in one household - something common in Columbia, where the film is set.
Encanto, which means endearing or compelling, is directed by Byron Howard, known for Zootopia and Tangled.
