SHAH ALAM - Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) secretary-general Amira Aisya Abd Aziz admitted that the party could not contest alone in the next general election as it needed the support of a larger coalition to reach out to the people and form a government.

Fresh from winning the Puteri Wangsa state assembly seat in the recent Johor state election, Muda remains steadfast in their alliance with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming General Election (GE15).

According to her, Muda shared the same principles with PH from the very beginning, which made them the best ally for GE15.

“Muda has stated many times that we want a united opposition in our fight for political stability.

"Muda and PH share the same struggles and we are more than comfortable working with them after what went down in the Johor state election," she told Sinar Premium.

She explained that although Muda could try to stand on its own two feet or even win 10 seats, it will still not be enough to form a government.

“I am of the view that Muda, as a new party, cannot stand alone if it wants to form a government.

“It is very clear to me that if we were to do that, we will need allies who share the same goal.

"We have held a discussion after the state election as well to address Muda's strengths and weaknesses," she added.

Amira Aisya also denied that the six-cornered fight in the Larkin state constituency, which also involved Muda and PH, put a strain on their partnership.

“It actually improved our relationship and we will now strive to work together.

“It is very important for Muda and PH to take time before the next state election or even GE15 to establish a closer relationship,” she insisted.

In the Johor state election, Amira Aisya was the only Muda candidate to win a seat with 22,884 votes.

“I had mixed feelings when I won. I was overwhelmed and a little nervous because the victory became my starting point to bear a greater responsibility for the people of Puteri Wangsa.

“I am also determined to provide the best service as a benchmark to future Muda candidates," she said.
