SHAH ALAM - After several sightings of tigers in residential areas in Dungun, Terengganu, the government has set up a team to keep tigers away.

Energy and Natural Resources minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said five staff from the Dungun district office and 13 wildlife rangers under Biodiversity Protection & Patrolling Programme (BP3) will be part of the team.

“They will monitor and patrol several locations,” Takiyuddin told the Dewan Rakyat.

He added 22 units of cameras have been placed in Bukit Bauk area and at public recreation areas to monitor the presence of tigers.

Department of wildlife and national parks (Perhilitan) have installed two units of tiger traps in the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) plantation, Hulu Paka, Terengganu, Takiyuddin further said.

However, cooperation from farmworkers is needed,” he added.

“Perhilitan has taken the initiative to advise villagers and farmworkers to be cautious and not to act alone when coming in contact with a tiger.

He also advised villagers to install fences and lights around their homes.

Those in need of assistance could contact Perhilitan Hotline 1800885151 or contact the police.

On March 10, a food deliveryman narrowly escaped a tiger attack in Dungun. Over the years, there has been several reports of tiger sightings at residential areas.
