SHAH ALAM: Maternity leave has been extended from 90 to 98 days, this comes after amendments to the Employment Act 1955 were approved at the Parliament today.

Paternity leave has also been increased from 3 to 7 days. Employers will be restricted from terminating pregnant workers.

The amendments allow workers to apply for flexible work arrangements, depending on the type of workplace and working hours.

Employers will now also be required to display information that can help raise awareness of sexual harassment.

The proposal to increase maternity leave was first raised in 2019 by the human resources ministry under the Pakatan Harapan, it suggested 75 days instead of 60 days then.

Pressure groups had been calling for maternity leave to be increased to 98 days since 2019.

The amendment further states under Section 90B, any employer who threatens, deceives or forces workers to do any type of work or prevents their workers from leaving their place of work could now be prosecuted.

Those found guilty could face a fine of up to RM100,000 or two years imprisonment or both.
