LGE: MoU dead in the water if anti-hopping law don't go through

SHAH ALAM - The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of political cooperation signed by PH and the current government will end if the anti-hopping law is not tabled as what was agreed, said DAP outgoing secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Lim stated that previously PH has made their stance clear that if their demands under the MOU was not met, then they will not proceed with the agreement.

“If the anti-hopping law is not passed then it would be the end of the MoU,” Lim Guan Eng said during a press conference at the DAP national congress today.

This follows after de facto law minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the government has postponed the tabling of the Federal Constitution (Amendments) 2022 Bill on Anti-Party Hopping and Limiting the Tenure of the Prime Minister from its deadline, prior to March 24, the last Parliamentary session before it meets again in July.

Wan Junaidi explain the decision was made as the government needs more input from stakeholders, particularly from BN and PN.

However, Lim said there is still some confusion stemming from Wan Junaidi's statement as the parliamentary order paper stated the tabling for the first reading of the constitutional amendment bill is still slated for tomorrow (March 21).

When asked whether the opposition is likely to extend the MoU with the current government, Lim stated that PH top leaders will meet with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri to get better clarity as both sides of the political divide have propped up different narratives on the MoU.
