KUALA LUMPUR: Umno's number two today said the party wants their internal polls to be held within six months after the general elections.

Umno Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the decision was one of the "biggest decisions" made by the party.

"I hope the prime minister will look into this.

"When we write to Registrar of Societies (RoS), we hope no one will stop this as the minister in charge of this is not from Umno... Tahu saja lah kan (You just know it)," he said in his closing speech at the Umno Annual General Assembly 2022.

Mohamad, commonly known as Tok Mat further said history has shown party polls before GE splits and weakens the party.

"Umno is now improving (gaining public support) and it should stay united," he added. Mohamad further said there is a "feel good" factor for Umno and it was crucial to hold GE15 this year as support from the rakyat was encouraging.

However, he said this will be discussed further by the top five leaders in Umno.

"We do not want too many people (to discuss this) as it will create confusion," he added.

He further warned that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Pejuang has expressed intentions to join hands with the opposition for GE15, a move that will strengthen the opposition bloc.

He further said BN won the Melaka and Johor state elections was because there was a major split in the opposition bloc and it is imperative for the party's top five leaders to discuss when is the right time to call for a general election.

Speculations have been rife that general elections may be held by July this year.
