Tabling of anti party hopping and PM’s term limit bills put on hold

SHAH ALAM - The anti party hopping and the Prime Minister's term limit bills which were supposed to be tabled in this month’s Parliament sitting, has been postponed.

De facto law minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar in a statement said the decision was made after the Cabinet agreed that the bills needed further scrutiny from stakeholders particularly Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

This, he said was to ensure that the constitutional amendment will gain a two-thirds majority support when it is tabled in Parliament later on.

According to Wan Junaidi, a letter and questionnaires were sent out to all party leaders along with the draft of the bills.

“This initiative is a continuation of the nine engagement sessions previously held with various parties including members of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara as well as component parties.

"I would also like to clarify that the engagement sessions with BN and PN scheduled on Feb 26 and 28, this year, have been postponed upon the request of both parties to focus on the Johor state election,” he said.

He added that once the opinions and inputs from all parties have been obtained and with the Cabinet’s approval, the bills will be tabled in a special Parliament session under the Standing Orders 11 (3) of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara.

Wan Junaidi also reiterated that the government was always committed and will continue its efforts in realising the enactment of the bills to ensure political stability in the country.
