TAWAU - At least 500 squatter homes were destroyed in a fire at Jalan Apas Kampung Kurnia Jaya, Batu 4, here, on Thursday evening.

However, no injuries were reported in the incident which occurred at about 4.30pm.

A spokesperson from the Sabah Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre (PGO) said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at about 4.45pm.

He said a total of 49 members from the Tawau Fire and Rescue station were despatched to the location with the help of personnel from the Semporna fire station and the Kampung Kitingan community fire and rescue team.

"The fire involved about 500 non-permanent squatter houses. The fire and rescue team is still conducting operations to control and extinguish the fire using open water sources.

"No casualties have been reported so far," he said in a statement.
