SHAH ALAM - The proposal to implement congestion charges or environmental fee will be discussed after the Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3) is completed, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said that once the public transportation network system is completed in 2030, automobiles entering the city centre may be charged a congestion tax.

He said this in a reply to Fahmi Fadzil (PH-Lembah Pantai) at the Dewan Rakyat today, adding that such fees were implemented in other major cities around the world.

Earlier, Fahmi had asked whether the government plans to introduce a congestion charge in Kuala Lumpur once the MRT3 project had been completed.

He also announced that 39km out of the 51km MRT 3 line will run along the perimeter of Kuala Lumpur while 12km will run in Selangor.

He said that the line would intersect populated areas such as in Ampang Jaya.

Wee added public engagement on MRT 3 line will be held for two months from July to gauge the response from the people on the public transport network system.

"It will not be a problem if readjustments or changes are to be made," he said.
