SHAH ALAM - Tan Sri Idrus Harun’s contract as the Attorney-General (AG) has been extended for one year.

Chief secretary to the government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali in a statement today said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to Idrus’ appointment for a period of one year effective March 6.

Mohd Zuki said this was in accordance with Article 145 (1) of the Federal Constitution.

This means that Idrus' contract which expired on March 5, will be renewed until 2023.

Idrus, who is also the brother of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun was appointed as AG on March 6, 2020, during the administration of then prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Prior to becoming the AG, Idrus had served the Election Commission (EC) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as the legal adviser.

Idrus, 67, who was a former Federal Court judge, replaced Tan Sri Tommy Thomas who resigned as AG on Feb 28, 2020, following Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as prime minister which also saw the fall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

According to the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may on the advice of the Prime Minister appoint an AG who will also act as the Public Prosecutor.
