KUANTAN - Three brothers were arrested on Friday on suspicion of storing and selling contraband cigarettes.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said one of them was a 36-year old sundry shop trader while the two others were aged 50 and 25.

“The suspects were arrested following a raid carried out by the intelligence unit of the Kuantan district police headquarters at a house in the area at about 2.40pm.

“We found and seized a total of 1,759 cartons of contraband cigarettes of various brands estimated to be worth around RM80,000.

“The sundry shop trader admitted that the cigarettes were for sale at his shop and that his two brothers had helped to obtain the illicit cigarettes from suppliers," he said.

He said the suspect also admitted that the tax-free cigarettes were purchased online through a WhatsApp group named ‘Rokok Seludup’.

Wan Mohd Zahari said the contraband cigarettes were kept in the house which was transformed into a storage room.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
