Perhaps one of the most anticipated tech releases of the year is HONOR’s first 5G foldable flagship smartphone, HONOR Magic V.

Boasting industry-leading design innovations, a revolutionary display and dynamic performance powered to deliver a best-in-class experience, I had the opportunity to experience the phone firsthand at the media launch in Menara Binjai, Kuala Lumpur.

HONOR’s latest innovation in product development was designed with both symmetrical and curved aesthetics, making it the first smartphone of its kind that is able to combine a sleek and slim design without compromising a huge display screen.

The biggest issue foldable smartphone fans have is that the creases start to show after the phone has been opened and closed shut from use. With HONOR Magic V, expect a creaseless fold due to what they call a “waterdrop hinge technology”.

This feature eliminates the gap caused by folding compared to the ordinary traditional ball-and-bat hinge favoured by other foldable smartphones and greatly reduces the thickness of the phone.

Initial tests have proven that the phone is able to withstand up to 200,000 folds, calculate according to the average opening and closing times of 100 times per day, which makes that five years for the average user.

Good news for those who lament foldable smartphones and their small screens - HONOR Magic V has a practical screen size of up to 90 per cent screen to body ratio, made possible with its ultra-thin curved nano crystal glass screen.

The thinnest screen in the market so far - 0.1mm thinner than the ordinary screen - reduces the phone’s weight by as much as 9 per cent.

If you’re clumsy like me and tend to drop your phone sometimes, rest assured that the drop resistance performance for HONOR Magic V is remarkable compared to the ordinary glass panel.

Another key takeaway of the phone is its magnetron sputter optical nano-film, which creates an ultra-low reflection (below 1.5 percent). This means less reflection and less strain on the eyes, especially when walking out on hot days.

Mobile users are constantly needing faster performance, so good news for those of you who can’t handle lags, for HONOR Magic V is the first foldable smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 5G processor.

Gaming is no longer an issue with this powerful phone, with the amalgamation of HONOR OS Turbo X and GPU Turbo X technologies.

Pair that with its 4750mAh high-capacity battery and 66W super fast charger, the phone makes for an overall improved gaming experience.

Those who love taking photos and videos can also benefit from getting this phone. With three rear cameras, a 50MP wide camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP spectrum-enhanced camera, the lenses support accurate, clear captures, even in dark settings.

Dual front cameras feature a 42MP front lens on both the internal and external screens, which makes for optimum selfies.

Music lovers can also enjoy its dual stereo speaker, which features a 3D sound effect with the X Ultra sound algorithm for a more immersive experience when listening to music.

My favourite feature however, makes the phone stand in a class of its own - the smart split display. With just a few taps, users can open multiple windows (up to four at once) and switch between full-screen, split-screen, and a floating window.

If that isn’t enough, HONOR Magic V is also the industry’s first foldable smartphone that supports multi-screen collaboration with the HONOR laptop, a haven for multi-taskers.

The phone is available in three colours, Space Silver, Black, and Burnt Orange. It is currently available exclusively in China, but tune in to the website for more updates should you want to get your hands on the device once it is officially up for grabs in Malaysia.
