AYER HITAM: Ex prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on authorities to probe ex- Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz and her family over 1MDB issue.

He said this is to determine if the allegations against them are true.

"It needs to be investigated to determined if Zeti or her family is involved in receiving money from 1MDB," he said in a press conference at Felda Ayer Hitam here today.

Dr Mahathir also stated that the revelation on Zeti was only made after he had left office and the 1MDB scandal had happened before his time.

"There was no problem when I was the prime minister. This thing was revealed after I had letf office and happened when Najib was prime minister,'' he said, referring to the scandal-ridden administration of Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Recently, former banker Tim Leissner told a US court that Bank Negara approved an “overnight” foreign exchange transfer of US$1 billion from 1MDB to PetroSaudi International (PSI) after Zeti’s husband, Tawfiq Ayman had allegedly been bribed to “make it happen”.

Tawfiq has denied Leissner’s allegations.
